Well we have made it to LA – we are in the airport just finished pizzas at Wolfgang Puck for first dinner (second dinner will be on the plane). And LAX has free wifi !
The docket we received when we handed over the car showed we had travelled 5,369 miles from start to finish – 8,640 kilometers in total !
Last night we saw our show “Love” and it was just fantastic ! The acrobatics combined with the music of the Beatles was splendidly done – great costumes and changing backdrops. Las Vegas at night is just a seething mass of people – the sidewalks are packed, the hotels are packed, everywhere is packed !
We left this morning and headed out slightly to the northwest of Las Vegas to a scenic drive called Red Rock Canyon. It is a section of mountain above the town where some sections of the rock are deep red and in other parts there are layers of red rock in the mountain.
It was then on to our final drive to LA. We have driven this before but it is just amazing scenery. Real desert but sections of mountain, long straight roads where you can see towns 10 miles away and traffic nearly all the way ! ( it is the Columbus Day long weekend so there are crowds everywhere).
We stopped for a late lunch at Barstow (Subway) – which also just happens to be an outlet shopping Mecca. Adrienne bought some clothes whilst we wandered the shops with the thousands of Japanese tourists.
On to LA and we headed to Santa Monica Pier so we could set foot on the Pacific Ocean beach having started at the Atlantic. Driving into LA is just amazing. It is so sprawling it would be like starting driving into the Sydney CBD from somewhere like Bathurst, on a road at least twice as wide as the M5 (and sometimes as wide again) and doing it at 110 km per hour all the way !
We all agree that it seems such a long time ago that we arrived at LAX but that the time away has gone very fast. With all our blogs and photos (and my hours of driving video !) we have a fantastic record of our trip and these will all give us the chance to look back on the many, many highlights.
Sorry, no photos today – too complicated to upload them at this stage. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon. Hope you have enjoyed our trip – we certainly have !
