Cruise – Day 8 – Nuremberg, Germany

Over the next few days ……….

Cruise Brochure

Your choices today include a sightseeing tour of the historic city of Nuremberg. See the storybook 900-year-old ramparts, the Imperial Castle and the Justice Palace where the War Crimes Tribunal sat in 1946, known as the Nuremburg Trials. The city tour leads you to the major sights, from the early beginnings to the present. Alternatively, for history enthusiasts other WWII sites include a journey to the Nazi party rally grounds, where rallies were held from 1933 until 1938 and take a self-guided tour of the WWII Documentation Centre.

This medieval Bavarian city is packed full of character. Back on board the Emerald Star enjoy a lecture in the evening.

Well, we visited Nuremburg on our 2011 tour and having subjected Adrienne to the “history enthusiasts” sites then I thought I might be stretching my luck pushing that option again !

In fact – as is usual for one of us on our tours – Adrienne has picked up a bit of a sore throat and was feeling a bit under par this morning so we opted to stay on the boat while the others headed off for a morning tour. This worked out quite well really – it was quite a nice sunny day – but still cool – and we had the pool area to ourselves. With the sun coming in through the large windows, Adrienne had a quiet recline in the comfy chairs (and an occasional snooze ?) whilst I set myself up at one of the tables and got a bit of work done.

Hard morning at the office !

At lunch they put on a special “Bavarian” spread with lots of sausage, pork knuckles, pretzels and all things Bavarian. In the afternoon we had a shuttle bus service running into the old town so Adrienne and I, Therese and Bob and Jo headed into town for a stroll around. Gae, Greg and Steve took advantage of the bikes on the boat and headed off along the bike paths adjoining the canal.

Off to the cathedral and some of the lovely stained glass windows

As I mentioned yesterday, we have been in the Main-Danube canal. Late in the afternoon Csaba gave a talk in the lounge on the history and detail of the canal. Although it wasn’t completed until 1992, various attempts have been made to create the canal – going back to the Roman Empire, then Ludwig I of Bavaria and finally Adolf Hitler (part of his overall “master building plan” which faltered once the war began).

The castle in Nuremberg

We had quite a laugh at dinner. There are no reserved tables and certainly few for all 8 of us. Early on we had persuaded a couple of the waiters to push 2 tables together and we had been sitting there ever since for our dinners. The waiters had taken quite a shine to our group. However, when we came down to dinner someone had sat at OUR table ! Our waiters quickly directed us to the “Captain’s Table” apologizing that someone had taken our normal table ! As we left dinner, they were quickly over to see us to make sure we had still enjoyed our dinner as our new waiters weren’t as good as them ?

A shot we took in 2011 – minus Liam this time !

After dinner there was another “games” night – this time “Liars Room” where Csaba, and 2 other of the crew had to persuade us which of them was giving the correct definition of a particular word. There were some interesting words – “bublifuk” and “fullfart” were standouts – and some of their definitions were hilarious ? Not winners again tonight however it was a really fun evening !

Overnight we would be reaching the top of our “upward” locks and starting on the “downward” locks toward our next stop in Regensberg tomorrow.

Today’s “Tour Trivia” – Modern tinsel was invented in Nuremberg in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver !
