Somewhere Unique

An aptly named getaway, Somewhere Unique is located in Wollombi, about a 2 hour drive from Sydney and only a short distance from the Hunter Valley wine country.

It is just a great place to relax and unwind for a few days. Set in a quiet bushland location, you could be miles from anywhere but you are really only minutes from Wollombi village. The retreats on the property (there are 2) are set well apart and you would hardly know the other was there. We first visited about 6 years ago when we stayed in one of the cabins – Allawah – for an anniversary getaway. They are basically self catering but the owners offer various options in providing meals and goodies should you prefer. This time we were in the other cabin – Lowanna – although the 2 retreats are basically identical in layout and only situated on different parts of the property. They are a one-bedroom retreat with bedroom separate to the living area, not a studio room. The retreats are decorated in different colour schemes, and have slightly different outlooks.

They are fitted out superbly and are very comfortable. There is a BBQ on the deck and an outdoor table setting which is just a great spot for breakfast – or lunch or dinner for that matter ! You would be hard-pressed to find a fault with the place, its very well equipped with anything you might need. If you are energetic, there are bikes available and the quiet dirt roads running through the local bushland are a very pleasant way to pass some time. We took a walk into Wollombi – about a 35 minute easy walk – for a morning coffee. If you want to relax, at this time of year the sun lounges on the deck are a great place to read a book, or snooze, or enjoy a glass of bubbly and listen to the sounds of nature or just soak in the peace and tranquility.

The drive getting there is also enjoyable – you have the option of taking Tourist Road 33 – if you’re driving from Sydney, simply hop off the M1 Freeway at the Calga exit and follow the TD33 signs. Alternatively, if you want a longer drive, you can try the route via Wisemans Ferry – take the Old Northern Road to the ferry and then once across the river Wisemans Ferry Road winds along the Hawkesbury River – another scenic option.

Another fantastic “quick tour” ! And we have a couple more planned soon !

For now, enjoy the scenery of Wollombi and the Hunter Valley !
