First stop, Canada …..
We are now into Canada but more National Parks on the horizon. Creston is really just one of those “on the way” stops but the scenery has been fantastic. It was a fairly long drive and involved a border crossing along the way.
After leaving Winthrop the scenery pretty much continued the old west theme with rolling brown hills. We even stopped at a roadside “historical point of interest” which relived the real life battle between the cattlemen and those dang sheep herders – “The Curtis Sheep Slaughter” !
We reached the Canadian border and fairly seemlessly went through. You are so used to the rules and restrictions when you fly – don’t pack this, don’t carry that – but when you are just driving around you tend to have things you wouldn’t when flying. But our few bits of groceries & a couple of beers managed to get through okay. Just lucky I passed up the bargains in the firearms aisle at the last Walmart 😁
Just over the border in Grand Forks we stopped to stretch our legs along an old train bridge trail across the Kettle River – very picturesque.
Having crossed the border we did initially have the car confused as we had changed from imperial to metric readings. So the “max 70 kms” signs were being read by the car computer as “70 mph” ! A little fiddling through the steering system controls and I managed to find a setting for dual displays so that little problem was resolved.
The rest of the drive was basically easterly following the Crowsnest Highway toward our stop in Creston. It was mostly pine forest dotted with lakes, Christina Lake being the largest.
We arrived in Creston late afternoon, staying at the Creston Hotel. We then had a walk through town – up and down the main street which took about 15 minutes. We ate dinner at Jimmy’s Pub and Grill for dinner – the downstairs of the hotel – and it was buzzing. We shared what was basically a tempura vege plate with flatbread and a nice tzatziki and Adrienne had a Greek chicken fettuccine and I had local cod .
Looking at a longer day tomorrow heading to Waterton Lakes as we lose an hour moving to mountain time.
